A Shiny Coat

  • Last updated on January 24, 2012

A Shiny Coat is an Indication of Health

A dull coat is a blessing in disguise. It’s the first indication that a pet may have a health concern that needs addressing. It may be caused by stress or it may be something more serious. The best thing to do is figure out the root of the problem instead of covering it up with a leave in conditioner. A veterinarian or pet nutritionist can help with this!

It could use some Freshening Up!

If upon closer assessment, the pet is found to be healthy and happy, perhaps the coat just needs a little freshening up. The most simple and effective way of going about this is by having the pet groomed. A silky, shiny coat is the result of a healthy coat that a groomer can help to achieve.

A groomer will provide the pet with a professional haircut, a toenail trim, and an ear cleaning. This is the perfect base for starting a personal grooming routine with the pet. If possible, the owner can stay during the session to learn what proper grooming techniques can be added to a routine.

A Daily Grooming Routine

Now that the owner knows the proper grooming techniques, a grooming routine can begin. This consists of brushing the pet’s coat and teeth daily, and clipping the nails on a regular basis.

Brushing the coat evenly distributes the oil from the skin throughout the hair. That’s what creates the shine! Starting when the pet is young is advantageous so they can become accustomed to it. An older pet may take some getting used to. Just take it slow and do whatever the pet will allow, gradually increasing the amount daily. The pet will soon be able to sit through and enjoy an entire session.

Omega 3-6-9

A pet’s diet is a determining factor of its health. Its food must provide sufficient nutrition otherwise it will suffer from malnourishment. Being deficient in healthy fats reflects in the condition of the pet’s skin and coat. This is usually the case when a pet has dandruff. An EFA & EPA supplement of cold-pressed oils from fish, flax, coconut, borage, and primrose will help to maintain the tone, shine, and elasticity of the skin and coat.
