Oral Hygiene in Pets

  • Last updated on January 24, 2012

Dental problems can be avoided with an established dental care routine. This consists of brushing a pets teeth with a pet toothbrush and pet toothpaste every day, and taking them to the veterinarian for a check up and if necessary, a cleaning.

Risks of Bad Dental Hygiene

If a regular dental care routine is not followed, pets are at risk of acquiring plaque, which may develop further into periodontal disease, gingivitis, receding gums, and tooth loss.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease creates an infection that can spread from by the bloodstream to the vital organs including the liver, kidneys, lungs, and heart.

Common symptoms

  • Consistently bad breath
  • Red gums and exposed tooth roots
  • Yellow to brown film on teeth
  • Reluctance to eat due to mouth pain & difficulty chewing
  • Drooling
  • Pawing at the mouth or rubbing the face on the ground

High Risk Pets

All pets are at risk, but especially short-nosed breeds, pets with smaller mouths, and elderly pets.

Treatment

Veterinary treatment ranges from tooth brushing, descaling while the pet is under a general anesthetic, or dental surgery. Early detection is the best treatment of all.

Prevention

Dental problems can be avoided with an established dental care routine. This consists of brushing a pet’s teeth with a pet toothbrush and pet toothpaste every day, and taking them to the veterinarian for a check up in order to catch any problems before they get out of hand. A healthy diet of harder, crunchier foods and occasionally providing the pet with a chew toy has a big impact on promoting good dental hygiene.
