Policies & Requirements

** The veterinarian must be approved and accredited by the Government Veterinarian Authority of the pet’s departing country. If the pet is departing Canada, the veterinarian used must be CFIA approved. 

** All dates must be written in the ISO (International Standards): dd/mm/yyyy

** All documentation must be completed in blue ink

Requirements

1. Microchip

The pet must be implanted with a microchip that is compatible with international standards (ISO 11784/11785). Microchip Implantation Record must be provided. Microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination. 

2. Vaccinations

Dogs:

Valid Certification of DHLPP Vaccination within 1 year and 4 weeks prior importation.

Valid Certifications of two (2) Rabies Vaccinations. The pet must be 90 days or older before the first vaccination, and the second vaccination must be one (1) year before the import.  

Cats:

Valid Certification of FVRCP Vaccination within 1 year and 4 weeks prior importation.

Valid Certifications of two (2) Rabies Vaccinations. The pet must be 90 days or older before the first vaccination, and the second vaccination must be one (1) year before the import.  

3. Rabies Titer Test

This blood test must be administered to both cats and dogs by an approved government facility between after 120 days but before 365 days of the most recent rabies shot.  After the test, pets must stay in the exporting country at least 180 days, but no more than two (2) years after.

4. Permits & Licenses 

Permits must be obtained from The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the country of import. Copies of all vaccine stickers must be provided to obtain import permit. 

5. Veterinarian Health Certificate 

The pet must be accompanied by a Veterinarian Health Certificate, available here, that must be issued 10 days prior to departure. http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/heasan/export/petcom/petcome.shtml

6. CFIA Endorsement

The following forms must be sent to the local CFIA for their stamp of approval: Microchip Implantation Record, Rabies Certificate, Veterinarian Health Certificate, and Veterinary Letter.

7. Quarantine

The Animal Quarantine Service (AQS) must be notified of the pet transport forty (40) days prior to arrival. The process could take up to six (6) months to complete. Providing all requirements and documentation have been met, pets must undergo 12 hours of quarantine. If they have not been met, pets may undergo a maximum of 180 days. 

Upon arrival, the AQS must be provided with the following forms: Advanced notification acknowledgement sent from AQS, an Import Quarantine Application Form provided by AQS, International Health certificate, and two (2) rabies vaccination certificates.

8. Customs

To clear customs, the following must be provided: a copy of the pet owner’s passport, a copy of the visa (if available), and a note from the pet owner’s employer on company letterhead explaining the relocation

9. All of the original documentation must travel with the pet
